Mrs. Nguyen also provides Playful EMDR to help children process extreme stress and traumatic incidents. Since traditional EMDR involves structured steps that may be difficult for young children, playful EMDR integrates play, storytelling, and creative activities to make the process developmentally appropriate.
Mrs. Nguyen follows an eight-phase model as the original EMDR model of practice. She incorporates play therapy techniques to make the process playful, light and engaging.

The therapist gathers information and builds rapport through games and play.
Instead of just explaining coping skills, the child learns them through playful activities (e.g., “creating a safe place” using drawing, painting, drawing, stuffed animals, or sand tray play).
Identifying distressing memories using child-friendly techniques like storytelling, drawing, or using a “feelings thermometer.”
Instead of standard eye movements, therapists might use:
• Following a light-up toy or wand.
• Tapping games or clapping sequences.
• Drumming, playdough squishing, or bilateral butterfly hugs.
Positive beliefs are reinforced using creative activities (e.g., acting out a superhero version of themselves).
Children learn to notice how their body feels through movement or sensory play.
Ends sessions with a fun grounding activity like blowing bubbles or coloring.
Checking in through storytelling or drawing changes over time.
